Without the help of others, the conflict in Syria will not come to a halt. US President, Barack Obama has decided to plan a retaliation against Syria for an attack that took place in a Damascus suburb that killed nearly 1,500 Syrian civilians, 426 of them being children. Obama has claimed the attack is a direct “assault on human dignity,” and that such attacks could escalate to greater concerns, such as chemical warfare or the rise of terroristic groups. It takes a lot of courage to step up to the plate and stand up for a strong belief. Without people stepping up and taking action against those deserving, the victims will remain victimized and the oppressors will continue their oppression. Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, documented his experiences with concentration camps and Nazis in his book, Night. Wiesel is famously quoted saying “We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere.” Obama’s view and actions on Syria is exactly what Wiesel is asking for. Help for those who need it. With the United States taking steps forward against the Syrian Civil War, perhaps other countries will too and eventually put an end to the unnecessary violence that has lead to the deaths of thousands of innocent people.
